What she's actually testing

Your level of emotional investment — and how much information you'll surrender under social pressure. Early definition of intentions is almost always a scarcity signal: the man who needs certainty can't afford not to have it. Information asymmetry is your edge. She's asking you to give it away.

Why it works on most men

Men who've been burned try to avoid ambiguity — they over-define early to prevent misunderstanding. Men in scarcity define because they need certainty. Both reveal the same thing: you've invested enough to be afraid of the answer.

The response framework

The obvious: 'I'm enjoying getting to know you. Let's see where it goes.' Truthful, non-committal, doesn't telegraph your position. The disruptive: flip the information dynamic. 'What do you want?' — not as deflection, but as genuine curiosity. You're interested in her answer before giving yours. The man who gathers information before releasing it operates from an entirely different position than the man who gives it on request.
